Daily study is vital for good performance. Studying or reading will expand your mind and help you improve your retention capacity, focus and concentration. With only 24 hours in a day, I juggle many different activities from being a blog consultant to working full time and knowing how to fit daily study into it has been a challenge but here are a few methods I use:
Choose Your Preferred Learning Style
There are many learning styles, everyone has a different way of learning and different individuals can retain content better in many different ways. The styles include;
- Visual learning; where pictures and images are used.
- Audio; where sounds and music are used.
- Logical; where reasoning is involved.
- Verbal learning; where you use writing and speech to learn.
- Social learning; where you learn in a group of friends or colleagues.

Set Achievable Study Goals
Employ the SMART approach to set your learning goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time bound. Make sure your learning goals have a deadline. If other activities consume more of your time, you may consider scrapping some of your social time and maximize study time. You must put your subject performance in consideration when setting goals.
Set a Daily Study Time
Make it mandatory to study on a daily basis. The specific study time for the day may change due to unforeseen circumstances but you should make sure you study thereafter. Allocate maybe one hour or two hours per day in your spare time and be sure to include breaks. Your environment has an impact on how effectively you study, this could mean that you should identify which environments help you relax and absorb the most information. Would you prefer a place with some background noise as opposed to a quiet place? Would you prefer a dim light to a bright light? Whatever your pick may be, just make sure you choose one that fits you. Remember to rest, you have to get some rest; your body is not a machine and it needs about 7 or 8 hours of sleep a day.
Jot down important points you come across to help you retain information. the important points. Basing on your learning style as mentioned earlier, you can also draw simple diagrams to summarize if you are a visual learner. You can use mnemonics to joggle your memory. These include music, rhymes, spelling games, names and many more.
Join A Group
If you are a social learner, join a study group where you can discuss topics, ask each other questions and learn from others. Just ensure that you participate in the group discussions and get the maximum out of it. When in class, make good use of your laptop and Smartphone When in class, you have to pay attention. You should not be surfing nor browsing the net, neither should you be texting. If you can’t control these habits, then switch them off. Know yourself and you will have a successful day of study.
